Clinical Hours Requirement

This course REQUIRES students to WORK in an OCCI approved veterinary facility at LEAST 20 hours a week under an approved preceptor.  Failure to complete the required hours each week will result in not being permitted to continue in the course. Employment must be maintained throughout the entire semester.  Changing of clinics once enrolled is NOT PERMITTED.

Facility Requirements

  • Employment in an OCCI approved veterinary facility.
  • Change of clinics once registered for the course IS NOT PERMITTED.
  • All work must be done under an occi approved preceptor.
  • MUST be an actual employee, no volunteer or interning permitted.
  • Site can be large animal, lab animal, zoo, companion animal or exotic animal.
  • May use the same site that is used for COOP if done during the same semester.

Preceptor Requirements

  • Must be an OCCI approved preceptor.
  • All work must be completed under the preceptor at the occi site.
  • Preceptor must be a licensed/credentialed veterinary technician or veterinarian.  Non credentialed staff cannot serve as a preceptor but may assist with your learning.  They just cannot sign off on ANY task or paperwork.
  • It is HIGHLY recommended that you have at LEAST TWO preceptors approved in case one is out.  There are no extensions given if your preceptor is not available to sign off. Which can cause you to fail so plan ahead.

Hours Requirements

  • Students are REQUIRED to complete a MINIMUM of 20 hours each week at the OCCI approved clinic listed on the course request form.
  • Failure to maintain the hours each week will result in being locked from further course content.
  • Failure to maintain hours throughout the entire semester will result in the inability to take the final exam, attend fast track lab, submit clinical tasks, access course content.
  • Signature stamps, signature images, or computer signatures/initials are not permitted and are treated as a forgery and a violation of the academic honesty policy resulting in a failing grade for the course.  Preceptors must sign in their own hand.

Time Sheets

  • Timesheets MUST be filled out completely.
  • Timesheets MUST be submitted by the posted due date or you will be locked from further course content.
  • Make sure the preceptor provides comments and signs and YOU have filled out the hours and dates/times correctly AND you have at least 20 hours showing.
