Required Clinical Hours

Overview

To gain experience working with animals students are required to complete clinical hours during each course they are enrolled in.  All students must complete at least 20 hours in a clinic, shelter, humane organization, etc.  The hands on can be done on large or small animals for this course, but each course may have its own requirements.
The clinic does not need to be approved for this course and the hours can be completed as a volunteer, intern, or employee as long as you are working directly with the animals (cleaning, assisting, etc.  not serving as a receptionist or clerical capacity).
NO EXTENSIONS will be given for any reason so do not wait until the last minute to start or submit the clinical hours record sheet.  Failure to complete and submit by the posted due date will result in failing the course.  Students will not have access to the final exam and will fail the course.
Completion of hours is a program requirement and is non-negotiable so please do not ask, Your email will be deleted and not responded to.

Summary

  • Complete a minimum of 20 hours during the semester at an animal care facility.
  • Hours must be completed at an animal care facility.
  • The facility does NOT have to be approved as an OCCI site.
  • Hours must be related to animal care, not clerical or reception work.
  • For this course only, you can be an intern, volunteer or employee of the animal care site.
  • If you are an employee you may use your normal work hours as long as they are not reception or management related tasks and are working directly with animals.
  • You must do a minimum of 2 hours at each visit and a maximum of 6 hours.  If you do 8 hours during a visit, only 6 count towards the hours.  If you do one hour, then you do not get credit for the hour as there is a 2 hour minimum.
  • Supervisor must fill out their part of the log sheet and sign EACH TIME you are there and log what you did and the date and times.  At the end they must provide comments on your activities and progress.  Make sure you LEAVE THEM A COPY of the completed sheet because the instructor is likely to verify the hours with the supervisor to prevent fraud.  If the supervisor cannot verify your hours and participation you will not receive credit.
  • NO extensions will be given for any reason so do not ask. Students have had 8 weeks to accomplish the assignment and turn it in.
  • Minimum hours per visit:  2 hours
  • Maximum hours per visit: 6 hours
  • Failure to complete ALL THE FIELDS in the log sheet results in failing the clinical hours and the course.
  • Failure to complete at least 20 hours using the above guidelines (minimum 2 hours and maximum 6 hours per visit) will result in failing the course.
  • It is the STUDENT'S RESPONSIBLITY to locate a site to do the hours at and complete the hours on time.
  • If you use more than one site you must complete a log sheet for EACH SITE
